More Than a Workout: Healthcare Prescribed Through Movement

If you’ve ever been told by a doctor to “just do more exercise,” you know how confusing and overwhelming that can feel when you’re dealing with pain, fatigue, a new diagnosis, or a complex medical history. Where do you even start? That’s where an Accredited Exercise Physiologist (AEP) comes in.

Exercise Physiologists are 5-year university-trained allied health practitioners..yes, the same as Physios. We don't hand out generic gym routines or one-size-fits-all circuits. Instead, we study human physiology, pathology, and biomechanics to prescribe targeted exercise dosages—taking into account your nervous system, cardiac output, bone density, joint mechanics, and daily energy levels. At The Movement Refinery, we are career professionals who flex around the demands of middle and older age and the responsibilities that come with it.

Whether your goal is walking up Errol Street without knee pain, navigating chemotherapy with more energy, managing Parkinson’s, or rebuilding bone density, we design movement that meets your body exactly where it is.

The Big Question: EP vs. Physio vs. Personal Trainer

01
Accredited Exercise Physiologist

Primary focus

Active rehabilitation & long-term conditioning. We use evidence-based exercise and behavioural coaching to treat chronic health conditions, rehabilitate complex injuries, and restore functional independence.

Best time to engage

When you need active rehab, are managing chronic disease or cancer recovery, want to overcome recurring pain, or need a safe, tailored exercise regime.

02
Osteopath/Physiotherapist

Primary focus

Acute injury diagnosis & passive treatment. Specialises in initial injury assessment, joint mobilisations, soft tissue treatment, and early-stage post-operative care.

Best time to engage

In the days or weeks immediately following an acute injury, fracture, or joint surgery.

03
Personal Trainer/Exercise Scientist

Primary focus

General fitness & conditioning for healthy populations. Focuses on motivation, fitness goals, and general body composition without medical training.

Best time to engage

When you have no underlying medical conditions, chronic injuries, or complex health considerations.

What Does an Exercise Physiologist Treat?

Conditions We Help You Manage & Overcome

Accredited Exercise Physiologists work across the full healthcare spectrum:

  • Musculoskeletal Rehab & Chronic Pain: Persistent low back pain, shoulder impingements, hip/knee osteoarthritis (including GLA:D® principles), and tendon injuries.

  • Cancer Care & Oncology: Reducing treatment-related fatigue, preserving bone and muscle mass during chemotherapy/hormone therapy, and supporting surgical recovery.

  • Neurological Conditions: Stroke recovery, Multiple Sclerosis (MS), and Parkinson’s disease using targeted neuroplasticity and gait retraining.

  • Cardiovascular & Metabolic Health: Type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, cholesterol management, and cardiac rehabilitation.

  • Women’s & Hormonal Health: Pelvic health considerations, perimenopause, menopause, and active bone density protection (Onero™ principles).

  • Healthy Ageing & Falls Prevention: Balance retraining, joint mobility, and functional strength for lifelong independence.

The TMR difference: clinical science meets movement artistry

We combine clinical precision with a welcoming studio atmosphere:

  1. A Dedicated 75-Minute Assessment and subsequent 60-minute follow-up: We sit down, listen to your story, and conduct comprehensive objective testing using VALD technology, functional movement screens, and cardiovascular assessments.

  2. Individualised Clinical Prescription: A bespoke movement plan designed for your lifestyle, whether 1-on-1, in an intimate small clinical group, or through home exercises on Physitrack.

  3. The Icing on the Cake: Alongside clinical strength and conditioning, our studio seamlessly offers additional training in Classical Pilates or Calisthenics as clients become ready to move beyond the clinical into broader disciplines.

  4. Allied Health Communication: With your permission, we send detailed reports back to your GP or specialist so your entire care team is aligned
