Our five-week introductory course sequences are designed to help you move with greater ease, reduce everyday aches and pains, and build the foundations for a strong, resilient body as you age. At The Movement Refinery West Melbourne, Pilates is taught as a complete, intelligent system — not a workout trend. Our teachers are trained in legitimate classical Pilates lineage and work with small groups (maximum 6 clients) so you’re seen, supported and progressing with confidence.
Our group programmes will help you excel if you’re already moving well and comfortably. If you require support due to pain, injury or medical considerations then our Clinical Exercise Programme is the right place to get started; will determine this together through your initial consult process.
We require an initial consultation and in-studio assessment because your body deserves more than guesswork. By understanding your intended outcomes, history, movement patterns and collection of objective measures from the outset, we can place you in the right programme, ensure your long-term progress and deliver training that delivers real, lasting results.

FAQs
-
Yes. This course is designed for real bodies — including those with aches, niggles or a long break from movement. Exercises are taught with care, clarity and options so you can move safely and comfortably while building confidence. If you have clinical rehabilitation goals or medical conditions that require targeted support, we’ll offer you a place in our clinical exercise programme instead.
-
Not at all; our studio is truly geared to those over 40 anyway. Many of our clients begin Pilates later in life. Classical Pilates is about improving how your body functions now and supporting strength, balance and mobility for the years ahead.
-
Our focus is on improving posture, joint health, strength and movement efficiency — all of which commonly contribute to back, neck, hip and shoulder discomfort. Many clients notice they move more freely and feel more at ease in their bodies as the weeks progress. General aches and pains from not moving enough or moving in one way too much can be helped with these courses, however for injuries and rehabilitation, we direct you to our clinical exercise programme.
-
You won’t be, we’re here to help and classes are capped at six clients. You’ll be guided at your own pace, with some individual attention and plenty of encouragement throughout. The Movement Refinery is a learning environment for you to understand your body and how to live in it fully, we are not competitive or performance-oriented.
-
Once you complete Courses A and B, we’ll help you choose a pathway that suits your goals. This may include progressing into Courses C and D our unique Joe’s Gym sessions, or supported autonomous practice. There’s no pressure — just thoughtful options.
-
No. You start exactly where you are. Strength, mobility and confidence are built through the process, not expected on day one.
-
This process allows us to understand how you move, place you in the most appropriate programme, and ensure your training is safe, effective and aligned with your goals from the outset. Rather than trial-and-error or one-size-fits-all classes, this client-centred approach protects your long-term progress and ensures your investment in Pilates leads to meaningful, lasting results. This isn’t a barrier to entry — it’s how we take your training seriously.
-
Classical Pilates equipment was designed by Joseph Pilates to teach the body, not compensate for it. The springs, proportions and resistance demand precision — you can’t shortcut technique, you have to earn it. In this way, the equipment acts as a second teacher, providing constant feedback and guiding you toward correct alignment, control and strength. Our apparatus is built faithfully from Joseph Pilates’ original patents by premium American manufacturers, ensuring you experience the method as it was intended — where better technique leads to deeper, longer-lasting results.
-
Yes. Pilates here is taught as a complete classical system, in small groups, with a strong emphasis on technique, skill-acquisition and clients taking an active role in their training to foster long-term body health — not fast-paced group fitness masquerading as Pilates. We are built for you and here to help and believe that our methodology is physiologically transformative without needing to overdo it.
