Accredited Exercise Physiology | North & West Melbourne
Clinical Exercise, Strength & Balance for Older Adults in North & West Melbourne
Supervised by University-qualified Exercise Physiologists in a welcoming, private space.
Why Targeted Strength Matters as We Age
Many older adults walk regularly around Royal Park, Arden Street, or along the Maribyrnong River. While walking is fantastic for heart and metabolic health, research shows that walking alone does not stimulate bone mineral density, nor does it reverse age-related muscle loss (sarcopenia).
Without targeted resistance training, adults naturally lose 3% to 8% of muscle mass per decade after age 30—a process that accelerates sharply after 60.
Load
Bone Mineral Density Demands Heavy Load: To trigger bone remodelling and defend against osteoporosis, your skeleton requires structured, supervised progressive loading.
Falls
1 in 4 Australians aged 65+ falls each year: Falls account for over 77% of injury hospitalisations in older adults. Progressive resistance and balance training reduce that fall risk by up to 34%.
Movement in community
Daily Functional Power: The strength needed to step off a high kerb, rise from a low armchair without using your hands, carry heavy shopping along Errol Street, or travel independently relies on targeted muscular power.
Pathways to Move: Choose the Support You Need
We recognise that no two bodies and no two routines are alike. We offer structured evidence-based programs alongside flexible, independent options.
Clinical Exercise Physiology 1:1
Best for: Complex medical histories, balance anxiety, post-surgical recovery, or neurological conditions.
If you prefer private attention or have multiple health considerations—such as cardiovascular conditions, joint replacements, spinal issues, or frailty—our private 1-on-1 sessions give you undivided clinical oversight.
Individualised movement analysis and continuous monitoring.
Progression calibrated strictly to your energy, tolerance, and confidence.
An ideal starting point to build confidence before transitioning into group programs.
2. GLA:D® Hip & Knee Osteoarthritis Program (Supervised Group)
Best for: Knee or hip joint pain, stiffness, and preparing for or delaying joint replacement surgery.
GLA:D® (Good Life with Osteoarthritis: Denmark) is an internationally recognised, evidence-based program for people with mild, moderate, or severe hip and knee osteoarthritis. Through neuromuscular control exercises and patient education, GLA:D trains joint alignment and muscle control, reducing daily joint pain and reliance on pain medication.
12 supervised neuromuscular exercise sessions over 6 weeks.
Two dedicated education sessions covering joint mechanics and self-management.
Clinically proven to improve mobility and reduce the need for surgical intervention.
3. Onero® Bone Density Program (Supervised Group)
Best for: Osteopenia, osteoporosis, and fracture prevention.
Onero® is an evidence-based clinical program developed through the landmark LIFTMOR trials at Griffith University. Unlike general gym workouts, Onero utilises targeted, high-intensity resistance training and impact loading under strict exercise physiologist supervision to safely stimulate bone formation in the spine and hips while improving posture and balance.
Supervised in small clinical groups.
DXA scan tracking to monitor objective bone density changes over time.
Safe, progressive loading tailored to your spinal health.
Maintain Independence, Protect Bone Density, and Move with Confidence
Ageing well is not about slowing down—it is about moving with strength, control, and certainty. Whether you are navigating the steep heritage steps of a Victorian terrace in North Melbourne, walking the bluestone footpaths of Kensington, managing hills around Parkville, or staying active for everyday life, your body needs targeted physical conditioning to stay resilient.
At The Movement Refinery, our Accredited Exercise Physiologists design evidence-based exercise programs tailored to your medical history, bone density, and current capabilities. Whether you are managing osteoporosis, living with joint osteoarthritis, or looking to build functional balance, we provide a calm, clinical space focused entirely on your goals.
What to Expect at Your First Consultation

Thorough Medical & Scan Review: We review your medical history, current medications, GP notes, and recent imaging (DXA bone scans, X-rays, or MRIs).
Physical Assessment: We evaluate your balance, gait, joint range of motion, and functional strength at a gentle, comfortable pace.
A Clear, Collaborative Plan: We discuss which pathway—Onero®, GLA:D®, 1:1 sessions, or independent studio training—fits your goals, lifestyle, and budget.
