21 Years of Helping Everyday Bodies Move Without Fear
Movement Detectives for Bodies Over 40—Especially If You Hate Gyms
Recovering from an injury or persistent pain in your 40s, 50s, 60s, and beyond requires a very different approach from generic twenty-something sports clinic drills. Connective tissue recovery, joint loading, and postural habits evolve over decades—and if you are completely new to exercise, haven't moved regularly in years, or feel nervous that exercise might make your pain worse, walking into a noisy commercial gym is the last thing you need.
For over 21 years at The Movement Refinery, we have helped everyday Melburnians learn how to understand, trust, and manage their bodies in a calm, mirror-free, Health at Every Size (HAES) studio. Our ESSA-accredited Exercise Physiologists (AEPs) meet you right where you are—combining gentle, progressive loading, objective VALD performance testing, and practical education so you can get out of pain and back into life.
Targeted Clinical Exercise to Restore Pain-Free Function
Your body evolves through distinct seasons of life, and your movement should evolve right alongside it. Whether you are noticing sudden shifts in your energy, preparing for your second half of life, or navigating changes you were told to "just live with," you don’t have to figure it out alone.
Our studio is a supportive space where science meets practical, energising movement—helping you feel strong, capable, and at home in your body again:
Backed by our 21-year history at The Movement Refinery, we help everyday people learn how to manage their bodies when navigating sciatica, lumbar disc degeneration, facet joint sprains, or persistent postural back and neck pain. Through evidence-informed practice, clear education that takes the fear out of spinal movement, and video-guided Physitrack home programming, we give you the practical tools to get out of pain and back into life—even if you have never exercised before.
Spinal, Neck & Low Back Pain (Sciatica, Lumbar Disc Degeneration & Facet Joint Sprains)
Shoulder, Scapular & Thoracic Spine Integration
Learn how to use your shoulder, shoulder blade, and thoracic spine together to live pain-free and function well. Proper shoulder rehabilitation is far more than repeating rotator cuff band exercises ad nauseam—the benefit of The Movement Refinery's 21 years of experience is that we integrate your whole postural chain to restore natural overhead reach, carrying strength, and daily comfort.
Hip & Knee Osteoarthritis
Hearing "wear and tear" or "bone on bone" on an X-ray in your 40s, 50s, or 60s can make you afraid to load your joints, yet targeted movement is the single best medicine for cartilage health. As an accredited local GLA:D® Australia licensee, we deliver structured neuromuscular exercise and education proven to reduce hip and knee osteoarthritis pain, build joint confidence, and delay or avoid joint replacement surgery.
Pre- & Post-Surgical Rehabilitation (Joint Replacements & Reconstructions)
Whether you are preparing for an upcoming total knee or hip replacement, recovering from an arthroscopy or spinal procedure, or rebuilding after an ACL reconstruction, we guide every phase of your recovery. Using non-intimidating, objective VALD strength and balance testing, we ensure both legs and joints rebuild symmetrical, lasting capacity.
General Knee, Hip & Lower-Limb Pain
Aching knees on stairs or stiff hips after sitting rarely exist in isolation. We resolve patellofemoral knee pain, meniscal irritation, hip impingement (FAI), and ankle instability by retraining how your foot, ankle, hip, and trunk share load during everyday movement.
Lower-Limb & Shoulder Tendinopathies
In our 40s and beyond, tendons lose elasticity and become easily irritated by sudden spikes in activity—and complete rest only weakens them further. We prescribe calm, graded tendon-loading protocols for Achilles, patellar, gluteal (lateral hip), plantar heel, and rotator cuff tendinopathies, alongside ONERO® bone-health principles where bone and tendon care overlap.
Workplace & Transport Injury Recovery
Recovering from a workplace injury or road accident requires unhurried pacing and seamless medical communication. We deliver functional restoration and return-to-work conditioning funded through WorkSafe Victoria and Transport Accident Commission (TAC) rehabilitation claims.
Our 3-Step Patient Journey
Step 1: Thorough Initial Assessments
We start with a relaxed, private conversation about your injury history, spinal or joint scans, daily pain triggers, and your relationship with exercise, followed by a gentle movement screening and baseline testing using VALD performance technology.
A clear discussion of your personal goals, symptom triggers, and what success looks like for you
Step 2: Custom, Safe Prescription
We design a step-by-step protocol matched to your exact comfort level—integrating whole-chain postural mechanics, GLA:D® osteoarthritis education, or ONERO® bone loading where appropriate, plus simple, bite-sized home exercises on Physitrack so you always know what to do between visits.
Step 3: Guided Progression & Ongoing Support
We coach you closely in 1:1 sessions or small clinical groups, share formal progress updates with your GP, physiotherapist, or surgeon, and offer a welcoming bridge into Classical Pilates once you feel ready to expand your movement repertoire.
Regular re-evaluations to track outcomes with formal progress updates shared directly with your GP or specialist team
Rebates & Referrals
Medicare GPCCMP - formerly EPC or CDM:
If you have a persistent chronic condition (such as persistent low back pain, sciatica, lumbar disc degeneration, or osteoarthritis), your GP may refer you under a General Practice Chronic Condition Management Plan (Item 10953) for up to 5 Medicare-subsidised visits per calendar year.
Private Health Insurance:
Most major private health funds provide extras rebates for individual (Item 102) and group (Item 202) Exercise Physiology consultations. No referral is necessary to claim.
Department of Veterans' Affairs (DVA)
Gold and White card holders can access fully covered clinical sessions with an appropriate GP referral (D904).
WorkSafe Victoria & TAC: We support clients with approved WorkSafe Victoria and TAC claims for injury rehabilitation and return-to-work conditioning.
Do I Need a Doctor's Referral to Start?
No. You can book privately as a self-referred patient at any time. If you wish to claim via Medicare or DVA, a valid GP referral form is required prior to your first appointment.
On-the-spot claims (HICAPS/TYRO)
Instant studio claiming will be available by March 2027; in the interim, simply settle your invoice at the studio and submit your receipt to claim reimbursement directly.
The Accredited Exercise Physiologist (AEP) Difference
Navigating hormonal shifts or pelvic floor issues in a high-intensity gym or generic reformer studio can be intimidating—and at times, counterproductive or injurious. Accredited Exercise Physiologists (AEPs) are university-qualified allied health professionals dual-accredited with Exercise & Sports Science Australia (ESSA). We understand:
The Interplay of Hormones & Connective Tissue:
Why tendinopathies, joint pain, and recovery times change dramatically during perimenopause.
Cardiometabolic Risk Factors:
How declining oestrogen shifts lipid profiles and vascular compliance, requiring specific cardiovascular dosage.
Intra-Abdominal Pressure Management:
How to progress functional strength without exacerbating pelvic organ prolapse or abdominal separation (DRAM).
Multidisciplinary Communication:
We collaborate directly with your Women’s Health Physiotherapist, GP, Obstetrician, or Gynaecologist to ensure your medical plan is unified.
-
No. You do not need a referral to book a consultation as a private client or when claiming through your private health insurance extras. However, if you wish to claim Medicare rebates under a Chronic Disease Management (EPC) plan or access DVA funding, a formal referral from your GP is required prior to your appointment.
-
Yes. Our clinical space is safe, private, and discreet. We work extensively with women managing stress incontinence, urge symptoms, and pelvic organ prolapse.
We frequently coordinate directly with local Women’s Health Physiotherapists to ensure the intra-abdominal pressure management in your resistance training complements your pelvic floor rehabilitation.
Please note that we will require communication and clearance from your women’s health physiotherapist to ensure you are ready to exercise and how best to manage your intra-abdominal pressure.
-
Commercial group fitness or generic Pilates classes rarely account for the structural, hormonal, and bone-specific needs of women navigating perimenopause, menopause, or osteoporosis. AEPs program using calibrated resistance, objective diagnostic data (such as DXA T-scores), and clinical safety boundaries that standard fitness instructors are neither qualified nor insured to manage.
-
Yes. Most major private health funds offer rebates for Exercise Physiology consultations under extra cover.
-
Please wear comfortable movement clothing and bring any recent scan results—especially DXA bone density scans, spinal imaging, or relevant specialist letters—along with your Medicare or private health fund card.
