21 Years of Helping Everyday Bodies Move Without Fear
Living with a neurological diagnosis impacts how the brain communicates with the musculoskeletal system. Standard gym environments are frequently overstimulating, loud, and poorly adapted to support motor learning, spasticity, tremor, or fatigue. Directed by Accredited Exercise Physiologists (AEPs), our care distinguishes clearly between structural "hardware" conditions and functional "software" disruptions. For over 21 years at The Movement Refinery, we have helped everyday Melburnians learn how to understand, trust, and manage their bodies in a calm, mirror-free, Health at Every Size (HAES) studio.
Neurological Conditions We Support Daily
Individualised care plans built around symptom management, movement efficiency, and long-term autonomy. The studio is a supportive space where science meets practical, energising movement, helping you feel strong, capable, and at home in your body again
Evidence-based high-amplitude movement patterns to combat bradykinesia and hypometria. We incorporate multi-directional stepping, visual-auditory rhythmic cueing to manage freezing of gait, and cognitive-motor dual-tasking to protect executive function and balance in everyday environments.
Parkinson’s Disease (PD)
Stroke Recovery & Brain Injury
Targeting hemiparetic symmetry through closed-chain apparatus work that supports body weight while retraining bilateral coordination. We rebuild gait cadence, dynamic balance, and safe transfers, while integrating graded conditioning to protect systemic cardiovascular health.
Multiple Sclerosis (MS)
Preserving functional mobility, muscular capacity, and cardiovascular reserve across RRMS, SPMS, and PPMS. Our sessions prioritise strict thermoregulation-conscious pacing to prevent Uhthoff’s phenomenon, alongside closed-chain apparatus loading to address drop-foot and spasticity.
Functional Neurological Disorder (FND)
A disruption in how the brain sends and receives signals to the body—a functional software miscommunication rather than structural tissue damage. We utilize external focus cues, distraction protocols, and rhythmic whole-body movements to bypass corrupted motor pathways, paired with gentle autonomic pacing to manage fatigue and non-epileptic events.
Our 3-Step Patient Journey
A deliberate, three-stage clinical model ensuring safety and sustainable progression.
Step 1: Thorough Initial Assessments
Two unhurried, comprehensive consultations. We evaluate your neurological history, medication timing, vestibular balance, gait mechanics, autonomic triggers, and functional daily priorities, complete with initial VALD testing.
A clear discussion of your personal goals, symptom triggers, and what success looks like for you
Step 2: Custom, Safe Prescription
We step through your bespoke exercise prescription on the studio apparatus. We establish safe spring resistance loads, dial in external movement cues, and build your digital home program via Physitrack.
Step 3: Guided Progression & Ongoing Support
We coach you closely in 1:1 sessions or small clinical groups, share formal progress updates with your GP, physiotherapist, or surgeon, and offer a welcoming bridge into Classical Pilates once you feel ready to expand your movement repertoire.
Regular re-evaluations to track outcomes with formal progress updates shared directly with your GP or specialist team
Referrals, Rebates & Third-Party Schemes
Private clients welcome without a referral; third-party schemes fully accommodated.
NDIS: Capacity Building funding for Self-Managed and Plan-Managed participants (Improved Daily Living).
Medicare CDM / EPC: GP Chronic Disease Management referrals accepted with a modest out-of-pocket gap fee.
Private Health Insurance: On-site HICAPS claiming for Exercise Physiology (Item Codes 102 & 202).
TAC & WorkSafe: Accredited rehabilitation for compensable transport trauma and workplace recovery.

Frequently Asked Questions
-
Our studio is located entirely on the ground floor at 268–270 Rosslyn Street, featuring a wide, ramp-accessible entrance with zero steps or lip barriers from street level. Doorways throughout the facility comfortably clear manual and power wheelchairs, mobility frames, and assistance animals. Dedicated 1-hour and 2-hour drop-off/parking bays sit directly outside our doors on Rosslyn Street, providing flat, direct access straight into our clinical space.
-
Yes, absolutely. Support people are welcomed onto the studio floor. Whether you need assistance with arrival, transfers, emotional safety, or sensory navigation, your support person is encouraged to be present. With your direction, we can also teach them the exact movement cues, pacing frameworks, or manual support strategies you are practicing so you can transfer your gains safely to home environments.

We dose movement as a clinical prescription, not a generic workout. To avoid triggering worsening neurological symptoms caused by elevated core temperature) our studio is strictly climate-controlled. Sessions are structured around interval loading, supportive spring-assisted apparatus that reduces the metabolic cost of standing, and objective heart-rate and fatigue monitoring. We operate strictly within your energetic envelope to build muscular reserve without inducing post-exertional crashes.

We use evidence-based high-amplitude movement training, external sensory cueing, and cognitive-motor dual tasking to bypass compromised basal ganglia circuits. By utilizing external metronomic rhythm, spatial visual floor markers, and apparatus-supported rotational movement, we retrain the brain to initiate and sustain larger, smoother motor actions. This directly targets bradykinesia (slowness), rigidity, and gait hesitation, helping you regain stability and reduce fall risks in daily life.
-
We approach FND through a collaborative, neuro-affirming lens focused on communication between the brain and body rather than structural damage. Because voluntary movement pathways are often locked in a state of high threat or misfiring, we do not force standard repetitive exercises that draw hyper-focus to the affected limb. Instead, we utilize external attentional focus, whole-body rhythmic patterns, and distraction-based movement strategies to access automatic, involuntary motor pathways. Care is self-paced, body-neutral, and entirely free from judgment, helping your nervous system down-regulate and rebuild fluid, reliable movement.
-
Yes. You are fully supported to attend with whatever assistive technology, ankle-foot orthosis (AFO), frame, or walking stick you use for community ambulation. Our classical and clinical apparatus (such as the Reformer, Trapeze Table, and stable Barrels) provides secure, spring-assisted base support. This allows us to safely train weight-bearing symmetry, single-leg stance, and reciprocal stepping mechanics with zero risk of falling, working alongside your gait aids to progressively rebuild independent walking confidence.
